About Tests

In my work I discourage people from using tests, especially online tests, to determine their enneagram type.

My short answer when asked why is that tests are about 60% accurate.

My longer answer is that the point of working with the enneagram isn’t to magically, suddenly know our enneagram type. It’s to discover our type through thinking about ourselves in new ways, to learn to listen to our body’s reactions, to observe our feelings as they happen.

Figuring out our enneagram type builds the very skills we need to work with our type behaviors, reactions and patterns to create lasting change in our lives. At best, knowing our enneagram type without developing these skills turns the enneagram into a parlor game. At worst it can inflame the shame and anxiety that keep us stuck.

Having said all that …

I know some people really want to take a test. And test can be a handy way to double check our own conclusions. Even if we don’t agree with the test results, we’ve learned what type we probably aren’t.

Here is a free 36 question test.

There are longer, expensive tests you could take, but in my experience they are still only about 60% correct. If you choose to take a test, hold the results lightly. Notice how the questions and the final result made you feel. Strong emotions - both positive and negative - are signs the test may have something to tell you.

After you have taken the test, you will be sent to a results page. Use the links on the left to read the descriptions of the 2-3 types you have the highest scores in. The higher the score under the type, the more likely you are that type.
